It seems I missed the boat here by about 7 years but I still ran across your little blog today and it brought me a considerable amount of joy. On account of the pandemic, I've been nestling myself back within the folds of things I once loved and Escaflowne is chief among them. It was so warming and refreshing to hear so many deep and thoughtful takes on Van as well as many of the other characters. I've taken multiple screenshots of perfectly worded 'feelings' ive never had the proper words to convey. All of that thanks to yours and others musings.
Anyway. From the future I'd like to thank you for taking the time to do this in your past. It was something I was searching for and very much needed. A yearning has been fulfilled and has awarded me a great amount of peace.
